Catalan sport will stop competitions for 15 days to help contain coronavirus outbreaks

14/10/2020

All sports competitions in Catalonia, federated, school or private, will be postponed for two weekends. The trainings can continue to be done normally and apply the established safety measures and protocols. The sports federations are developing all competitions without incident in an exemplary manner and with traceability, complying with the protocols of Health and the General Secretariat of Sport.

All Catalan competitions will stop next weekend. This will be confirmed today by PROCICAT as a measure within the severe restrictions that the Catalan government is preparing to contain the coronavirus outbreaks of recent days. The measures will enter into force before the weekend, but the Catalan federations are already assuming their commitment to reduce competitions to help stop mobility during the weekends throughout Catalonia.

In a meeting between the UFEC and all the Catalan sports federations with the Secretary General of Sport, Gerard Figueras, it was explained that “the worsening of contagion data occurs because on weekends there is family mobility outside the municipalities, which greatly increases the risk, ”said Figueras.

This decision, which has yet to be validated by a court, would not affect training, or users of sports facilities or gyms, and will postpone federated, school or private competitions of any category in Catalonia. These already scheduled competitions will need to be rescheduled

"We are aware of the situation we are living in and we accept it with resignation," said Gerard Esteva, president of the UFEC. "But we have to make it clear and be strong that sport is not the problem. We have had cases, but we have acted to guarantee the traceability and applied all the protocols with SGE and Health ”, adds Esteva.

Only two weekends

The measures will not affect professional sports or competitions within the national or international calendar. The Catalan sports federations are asking for the break to be only two weekends, as has been proposed, and for the activity to be returned. "If the curve has not improved in 15 days, we should be able to open the federal competition. We ask that, if this is not the case, that the federated sports practice can be excepted in order to guarantee the normality of sports in the country ", he pointed out.
