The cradle of the hockey Catalan

The hockey reaches Catalonia at the beginning of the 20th century, supposedly imported for English students that introduced it at the society benestant Barcelonan. Simultaneously, the year 1911 at Terrace, Attend it Calasanci, a cultural and sportive entity local, decides to practice at the city a new sport and elects the hockey. They were the onsets of the two foci that will mass the practical totality of the hockey Catalan: Barcelona and Terrace, that from then on have maintained a healthy rivalry so much regarding number of chips and directors as a results and titles achieved. Especially remarkable is the big fans at the city of Terrace, that has more chips for number of inhabitants and where the hockey even has a street. All a lifestyle that has made famed the said: “at Terrace the boys and girls are born with a stick under the arm”.
At the years twenty the hockey already has made a definite room at the Catalan sportive life and distinct clubs like Polo, #the F.c. Barcelona and the Pompeya at Barcelona or the Lluïsos, the Terrace F.c. or the Calasancí at Terrace create sections of hockey and commence at disputing the first championships of Catalonia. The year 1923 constitutes officially the Regional Federation of Hockey of Catalonia being his first president the Baron of Güell. While, at other places of the Spanish territory has gone developing also this sport, although at minor size. Since the onsets and until our days the Catalan players have been the base of the hockey at the Spanish state, leading our selections the regional competitions and contributing the thickness of the players that have represented Spain at the international competitions.

Tradition and amateurism

During the decade of the 30, and because of the delicate political situation that lives the country, the hockey voice braked his development that stayed totally interrupted during the Spanish Civil War. It is from the years 40 when this sport lives one of the moments of main expansion reaching the principal Catalan cities and Lleida, Tarragona and Girona, and even in Mallorca. At the zone of the Maresme gives also a true tradition that today only maintains the Iluro H.c. of Mataró. Nevertheless, they track being the squads decans, Polo and the CD Terrace, those who lead the Catalan and national competitions. It will not be until the decade of the 60 that a club been born at Terrace the year 1935 as a section of hockey of the club Harmony, smashes with this bipolaritat historic, already with the name of Club Egara and after inaugurating the new installations at the Plan of the Boinaire, achieving gross nine championships of Catalonia tracked, several national leagues and Europa's two cups.

The development of the hockey in Catalonia has some differential shots that have gone reproducing along his history: the absolute amateurism, the familiar tradition that has transmitted the fans for parents's this sport at children, the huge specific weight of the clubs and the disinterested contribution of unnamed figures that have grossed a name at this history. “No concibo the profesionalismo deportivo, y at the hockey cumplen todas las virtudes deportivas that consider indispensable, one deport that it conserves puro, y ligado at él me siento at gusto”. Pau Negre's these words, pronounced at the years 60, have heard still today. Player, Catalan director, Spanish and international, mecenes, father and grandfather of players, Pau Negre is the figure that totals all these shots. An arena in Montjuïc that takes his name recognises his task and, for stretch, the of all those unnamed that can not mention here and that with his contribution have contributed at the expansion of the hockey in Catalonia.

New paviments: the hockey room and the artificial lawn

In March of 1956, under the auspices of the Catalan Federation, organises at Barcelona an international tournament of hockey room, that presents as a new sport. This modality, although equally federated, always has been more bound at the leisure and at the part lúdica of this sport. It excels, among of others, the annual celebration of the Tournament of The Fonts at the Club of Tennis The Fonts, at the beginning of each season and with turnout and expectancy every time main. There it viewed the best hockey room, with squads formed by pertinent players of several clubs that were almost selections of the best specialists of this modality.
At ends of the years 60 and principles of the 70 inaugurate areas of lawn that will permit a faster game and showy. They appear new clubs like the Kart Mediterranean or #the U.e. Castelldefels. #The C.f. Junior cements definitively the year 1965 with the inauguration of the new installations at Sant Cugat. The year 1971 Barcelona received the first cup in the world of hockey herb being the Catalan Federation the soul of the organisation. The parties played at Polo's areas at Barcelona and of the Can Rooms at Terrace and the Spanish selection, with 13 Catalan players, achieved the medal of silver after missing the final against the Pakistan. They are glorious moments for the hockey Catalan that at the 1973 had some 1400 chips.

Honor's the Division Catalan maintains with a stable number of clubs members: Polo, CD Terrace, Club Egara, FC Barcelona, Athletic of Terrace and Junior. The year 1980, the Athletic of Terrace, entity created the year 1952 for members of the squad Educación y Rest, grosses his first title at the maximum category. With this victory takes the relief at Polo that had returned to situate at the front, and inaugurates a decade of successes that includes nine championships of Catalonia, nine national leagues, eight cups of the King and that culminates the year 1985 with the achievement in Germany of Europa's Cup of Clubs.

At the onset of the decade of the 80 produces the transfer of the competences of the sport at the Generality, fact that supposes the recognition of the Catalan Federation as a public entity with own juridical personality. Simultaneously, they commence other times for the hockey, arrives the era of the artificial lawn, the clubs with squads at Honor's Division want to nourish of the necessary technical advances and commence at making budgetary balances for such to face at displacements, professional kicks or baggages. Yet, it maintains the amateurism.
These facts, joined at Barcelona's possible nomination as a headquarters of the Olympic Games of the 92 make that the Federation lead a tracked of negotiations with the distinct administrations for such to achieve endow at the Catalan clubs of new areas. With the signature of an agreement at the 1984 Polo, the Egara, the Athletic, the Terrace and Junior construct his first area of artificial lawn. That same year inaugurates the federative arena of Terrace and two years later Barcelona's nomination cements . For his tradition, the city vallesana outlines as a ideal candidate to receive the competition of hockey.

Of the olympic sleep at the reality of the professional sport

With the olympic challenge for in front, the hockey returns at living moments of expansion in Catalonia. At Terrace, the year 1988 are born two new clubs the Line 22, at present section of hockey of the Club of Tennis The Fonts, and the Matadepera 88, that have achieved to maintain and already present expectations of future with several squads at the inferior categories.

The federative activity of ends of the 80 comes marked by the collaboration at the organisation of the Olympic Games. The Games in general, and the hockey in particular, obtained an organisational success recognised worldwide. At sportive level, the prize arrived in shape of medal of gold, a sleep that four Catalan players, Anna Maiques, Cèlia Race, Núria Olivé and Elisabeth Maragall, lived at first person after grossing Germany at an intense final. It was the recognition also at the hockey feminine that always has had a number of chips relatively low and, as a consequence, with less resources and dedication for part of the sportive entities.

At ends of the years 90 the hockey Catalan had bipolaritzat. Two clubs, Athletic and Egara, maintained the hegemony at almost all the categories. It seemed impossible to smash this crushing supremacy terrassenca, but with the onset of the new century at Barcelona open new perspectives for this sport that go bound at a incipient professionalització. For the more continuistes this new line goes against of the sportive spirit that up to now governed the practice of this sport. For the others, is inevitable if we want to maintain us at the tallest levels competing with the best hockey European and world. The Federation, that does not live of backs at the reality, again has to lead a rational change to the new times becoming but the garant of a sportive practice that has his base, how says the text devoted at the Catalan Federation of Hockey with motif of the granting the year 1999 of the Cross of Saint Jordi, “at the spirit amateur and at a conception of the sport as a practice that persecutes the excellence at the balance of the mind and of the body”.
